BUILDING THE BASE, LITERACY:

Supporting High Quality Education for English Learners in Grades 6-12

This institute focuses on the design and implementation of participation structures for secondary language arts/literacy classrooms as a way to develop language for intermediate English Learners. It builds on the idea that rather than targeting content at their level, instruction needs to amplify texts, invitations for them to engage in productive activity, and supports offered. Accordingly, some of the topics you will learn in this institute include:

  • How to support students in acquiring the needed conceptual, analytic, and language practices they need to succeed in secondary language arts/literacy classrooms

  • How to amplify instruction generatively

  • How to develop students’ autonomy to read, discuss and write about informational and narrative texts in multiple contexts

  • How to build teacher expertise in engaging students in close and careful reading of complex texts by participating in authentic performance tasks

  • How to foster the development of oracy

  • How to use the QTEL approach to design lesson and/or unit plans that incorporate multiple scaffolding tasks to support students’ acquisition of standards-based content and academic language to access grade level texts
