BUILDING THE BASE, MATHEMATICS

Ambitious mathematics learning to meet the multiple, accelerating demands of the 21st century requires not just deeper critical thinking skills, but the communication skills to effectively convince others. This institute is based on the premise that mathematics teachers will need to enact substantive shifts to their practice if they are to challenge and support the English Learners in their classrooms to develop deeper conceptual understandings in mathematics while simultaneously engaging in ever more sophisticated analytic and language practices. Lessons must be crafted to provide multiple entry points and a well-designed structure that supports students as they deepen their participation in generative mathematical practices. At the core of this transformed instruction are quality interactions between English Learners and their peer: well-designed invitations to engage in sustained and reciprocal talk around both mathematical ideas and practices. Some of the themes participants will learn in this institute include:

  • How to determine the academic rigor, or cognitive demand, of a mathematical task.

  • How to enhance and increase the rigor of mathematical tasks.

  • How to enact pedagogical scaffolding that is both designed-in and contingent.

  • How to understand the strategic actions that constitute the generative mathematical practices

  • How to employ a lesson architecture that supports English Learners in developing deeper conceptual understanding as their uses of language simultaneously deepen and broaden.

  • How to draw upon the information flow inherent in mathematical relationships to design interactive structures that maximize students’ opportunities to communicate.

  • How to sustain a language focus in productive ways that deepen students’ language choices and autonomy over time.
