CURRICULUM DESIGN: AMPLIFYING ENGLISH LEARNERS’ QUALITY ENGAGEMENT IN MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, AND ENGINEERING PRACTICES

MATH AND SCIENCE SESSION*

Objective:

To expand the ability of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering teachers to design learning opportunities that deliberately invite and support English Learners’ development of conceptual understandings while simultaneously engaging in disciplinary practices.

 

Participants will:

  • Reconsider what is entailed in deliberately crafting lessons and units of study that both invite, support, and challenge students as they engage in productive, disciplinary activity.

  • Analyze disciplinary practices in terms of the strategic actions in which they consist and the language necessary to engage in those actions and practices.

  • Develop expertise in guiding teachers on the design and implementation of well- scaffolded lessons for English Learners.

  • Learn to modify lessons to deepen student academic development in subject-specific literacy and oracy practices.

 

*Pre-requisite: Having completed a QTEL Building the Base institute
