Our QTEL team will present at the 49th Annual NABE Conference, “NABE Rise Up 2020: A Perfect Vision.” The conference will be held at the Tropicana Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 25 – 28, 2020.

 

Wednesday, February 26

Presentation: English Learners in Mainstream Discipline-Specific Classrooms: The Development of Multiliteracies for All

Description: Come learn about two signature initiatives: Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) and Strategic Literacy Initiative (SLI) Reading Apprenticeship Both: Are committed to educational equity for all students Share an asset orientation to the development of students and teachers Build from sociocultural theory Have a solid evidentiary base High Challenge, High Support Instruction for English Learners: Designing Learning Opportunities in Mathematics and Science. Presentation: Meaning Making with Multi-Modal Texts: Developing language and deep understandings with English Learners

Description: This hands-on session focuses on how the pedagogical treatment of multi-modal texts coupled with student interactions serves to prepare students for complex sense making. By experiencing lesson from a student’s perspective, secondary teachers of English learners are provided with lesson planning practices which transform multi-modal texts into meaning-making tools that can be used across the curriculum. Participating teachers will take away specific, actionable insights as well as structures which can be used to support English learners in the various content areas.

Presentation: Fomentando equidad educativa para los estudiantes hispanohablantes: El diseño de oportunidades de aprendizaje transformadoras en español/Achieving equity: designing transformative learning opportunities for English Learners in the Spanish-language classroom

Description: This workshop session – conducted in Spanish – invites Spanish teachers (K-12), regardless of program, to design powerful language-rich lessons to engage EL and DLL in multiliteracy practices. Participants will experience the transformation of multimodal texts into meaning-making tools. This session, anchored in sociocultural pedagogy, focuses on the pedagogical treatment of multimodal texts to – through interactions – engage students in deep learning to make their potential a reality, and achieve equity through quality learning in the Spanish classroom.

Featured Presentation: Oracy development in the education of English Learners for the 21st century

Description: To be prepared for a productive, participatory life in the 21st century English Learners need to develop complex multiliteracies. Oracy -the ability to use language orally to navigate among plural identities, to express and advocate for their perspectives, to question and engage in the critical discussion of important issues- is a central component of a multiliterate, multilingual individual. Aída Walqui will discuss how to build quality interactions in the classroom destined to prepare English Learners for the world of tomorrow, and will demonstrate this future-oriented pedagogy using video clips from QTEL’s work in schools.

Presentation: Building District Leadership to Provide Quality Education to English Learners: The Clark County Case

Description: Leaders are key in the process of offering English Learners quality opportunities to learn. They set a high vision for what is possible, and then they support educators through a collaboratively developed plan of action that makes the vision possible. To carry out this complex task, leaders need to develop deep and generative knowledge about 1) English Learners; 2) learning subject matter and English simultaneously; and 3) creating systems to support teachers, students, and families. The presentation will describe the domains of leadership needed to carry out this job, and its development using examples from work in Clark County.
