TEXAS QTEL 2019-2020 CONFERENCE SERIES
Advanced QTEL Pedagogical Design*
Target Audience: Professional developers, curriculum designers, teacher leaders and instructional coaches for English Learners who have previously attended a QTEL Building the Base institute.
Objective: To provide conference participants with a firm base of theoretical understanding and consonant lesson design for effectively teaching English learners. Through participation in pedagogical experiences, this multi-day conference series will strengthen participants’ understanding of pedagogical scaffolding and its implications for accomplished lesson design. These advanced sessions will deepen lesson design practice by engaging participants in lesson design and critique.
Participants will deepen their vision of accomplished teaching for English Learners by engaging in a variety of activities beyond the five-day sessions. They will participate in one- on-one and group distal meetings with a QTEL expert to inquire and deepen their lesson design practice. The QTEL expert will lead the team in developing lessons following the three-part lesson architecture, including the careful design of learning activities that engage students in quality interactions, and abundant language practice. They will also engage as collaborative teams to discuss and respond to foundational literature, as well as consider its implications for practice. Throughout the conference series participants will meet distally with a QTEL expert as needed.
Participants who take part in this conference will:
Deepen understanding of sociocultural theory and implications for accomplished teaching
Identify lesson design features that support all students in engaging in quality interactions that simultaneously develop deep conceptual understandings and disciplinary language
