Advanced QTEL Conference: Shifts in Professional Learning for Teachers of English Learners*

Target Audience: Professional developers, curriculum designers, teacher leaders and instructional coaches for English Learners who have previously attended a QTEL Building the Base institute.

Objective: This advanced conference is designed to ensure participants’ appropriation of QTEL’s pedagogical approach to support quality teaching for English Learners. Through inquiry into practice, analysis and reflection, this advanced multi-day conference series will enable participants to develop a new way to look at teacher professional learning from a sociocultural and ecological perspective.  As opposed to a trainer-of-trainers model where professional development sessions remain static and, over time, become diluted, participants will engage, design and enact generative and theoretically sound professional learning opportunities for teachers.

Conference participants will:

  • Develop the generative expertise needed to conduct QTEL professional development, as well as adapt to QTEL professional development tools and materials in order to sustain local capacity and improvement in the future

  • Expand understandings of effective theoretically sound professional learning experiences for teachers of secondary English learners

  • Design and implement original professional learning opportunities for teachers

  • Develop professional learning portfolio to achieve certification as QTEL presenters

*Pre-requisite: Having completed a QTEL Building the Base institute
