TEXAS QTEL 2019-2020 CONFERENCE SERIES

Curriculum Design: Amplifying English Learners’ Quality Engagement in Disciplinary Practices*

Target Audience: Secondary teachers of English Learners, teacher leaders, and instructional coaches who have previously attended a QTEL Building the Base institute.

 

Objective: To develop the ability of Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and English Language Development teachers to design learning opportunities that deliberately invite and support English Learners’ engagement in subject-specific disciplinary practices.

Participants will:

  • Reconsider the principles and theoretical assumptions implicated in deliberately crafting lessons and units of study that both invite, support, and challenge students as they engage in productive, disciplinary activity.

  • Develop expertise in guiding teachers on the design and implementation of well- scaffolded lessons for English Learners.

  • Learn to modify lessons to deepen student academic development in subject-specific literacy and oracy practices.

*Pre-requisite: Having completed a QTEL Building the Base institute

Cost

$1,000 per participant

Each participant  will receive one set of instructional materials, handouts and a book.

Coffee will be served in the mornings.
