SCAFFOLDING ENGLISH  LEARNERS’ WRITING OF EXPOSITORY ANDARGUMENTATIVE TEXTS

This institute focuses on developing participants’ expertise of well-scaffolded instruction of the writing process of expository and argumentative texts. Specifically, participants will explore the purposes for student writing, and the scaffolding that is necessary to engage students in the writing of cohesive texts. Participants will deepen their understanding of expository and argumentative texts, and how to engage students in activities that allow them to explore, understand, and write within these particular genres. In addition, participants will become familiar with the functional approach to language, which is used widely nationally and internationally to support English Learners in developing control of their writing. Accordingly, some of the topics participants will learn in this institute include:

  • How to design lessons that support students’ reading and writing, weaving together conceptual, analytical, and language practices

  • How to engage students in quality interactions in both reading and writing activities

  • How to help students identify the expectations of a given genre, and how to incorporate that knowledge in their own writing

  • How to engage students in collaborative writing activities
