BUILDING THE BASE ELEMENTARY: AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO LITERACY ACROSS THE CONTENT AREAS*

In this five-day institute, participants will learn how to design equitable and quality learning opportunities by implementing high-challenge and high-support instruction for K–5 English Learners to simultaneously develop disciplinary knowledge and related conceptual, analytic, and language practices. Some of the topics to be discussed in this institute include:

• Understanding how a sociocultural approach to pedagogy promotes equity and quality learning opportunities for elementary English Learners’

• Recognizing and building from the immense potential of English Learners, including the assets they bring with them to their learning experiences

• Learning how to support the development of oracy through quality interactions around relevant and powerful ideas

• Utilizing the QTEL approach to design lessons that actively engage elementary students in high-challenge, high-support learning experiences centered around quality interactions with peers and the teacher

• Realizing ways to support students’ development from oral to written language
