BUILDING THE BASE, SECONDARY SCIENCE

Audience:

Science teachers in grades 6-12 who want to engage English Learners in rigorous science content and practices while developing their academic language.

Goal:

To develop the deep teacher expertise necessary to offer English Learners with quality opportunities to learn in the face of rapidly accelerating demands.

 

You will learn to:

• Understand the demographic, disciplinary, and design imperatives that accompany the learning of science for English Learners

• Identify cross-cutting concepts and practices that connect science disciplines

• Grow student agency over time by offering clear choices of language tied to broader, overarching scientific practices

• Design lessons that foster changes in English Learners’ participation over time
