DESIGNING AND AMPLIFYING CURRICULAR MATERIALS FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS – ELA, MATH, AND SCIENCE*

Audience: Participants who have attended previous in-person QTEL Building the Base or disciplinary institutes and want to develop expertise in writing, reviewing, or supporting lesson design. Educators who want to extend their understanding of sociocultural approaches to less design will also benefit from the institute as they learn to both analyze existing curriculum and generate lessons they can use in their practice.

Goal: To develop expertise in designing units and lessons that offer English Learners authentic, quality learning opportunities which develop disciplinary practices and language practices simultaneously.

You will learn to:

Evaluate the curricular materials you are provided in your teaching context and amplify them to:

Design content specific lessons that invite, support, and challenge students to engage in quality learning opportunities

Explore deeply the central ideas of your specific discipline while learning to support students to make meaning and understand those ideas

Offer students opportunities to deepen their knowledge of content specific practices, analytic practices, and the language they need to engage in these practices
