WRITING FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS IN GRADES 6–12

This five-day institute is designed to support secondary English Language Arts/Literacy educators as they empower English Learners to thrive in rigorous academic settings and advance their writing proficiency. The institute blends research-based theory with practical application as participants examine how a genre-based approach to writing can support students to more deeply understand disciplinary content and language. Through engagement in pedagogical exemplars designed around the Teaching and Learning Cycle, educators will learn how to plan and facilitate meaningful opportunities for students to listen, speak, read, and write in ways that lead to the production of genre-specific texts. By the end of the institute, participants will have developed expertise in scaffolding writing instruction, analyzing student work, and providing feedback that fosters growth.  Some of the topics participants will engage with in this institute include:

  • How a sociocultural approach to pedagogy promotes equity and quality in secondary English Learners’ classroom experiences

  • How to use the QTEL approach to lesson and unit design to incorporate multiple scaffolded tasks that support students’ development of conceptual understandings and foster writing development

  • How to develop students’ autonomy through genre-based instruction and the Teaching and Learning Cycle

  • How to gather and analyze evidence from student writing to provide targeted feedback and plan next instructional steps
