QTEL SECONDARY BUILDING THE BASE INSTITUTE

SERVICES  |  EDUCATOR LEARNING  |  INSTITUTES  |  SECONDARY BUILDING THE BASE INSTITUTE

OVERVIEW

QTEL support begins with a three to five day foundational institute that links theory and practice, helping participants “build the base” of understanding for successfully carrying out academically and linguistically rigorous work aligned with state standards for English Learners.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Secondary educators from all content areas and grade bands who have never attended a QTEL institute and want to learn how to meet the needs of their EL students while increasing student achievement through active engagement in academically and linguistically rigorous work.

Participants will:

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of sociocultural theory and practices

  • Develop knowledge of three levels of pedagogical support: macro-level curricular planning over time, meso-level academic and linguistic procedures used in particular lessons, and micro-level collaborative processes for moment-to-moment interactions

  • Develop a vision for quality practice with English learners that integrate and accomplish the goals of the five principles of QTEL

  • Increase understanding of and skills in using six types of scaffolding: modeling, bridging, schema building, contextualization, text re-presentation, and metacognitive development -in order to make rigorous texts and concepts accessible to English Learners

  • Increase understanding of scaffolding disciplinary discourse by analyzing standards aligned classroom exemplars
