COLLABORATIVE LESSON INQUIRY CYCLES
SERVICES | EDUCATOR LEARNING | COLLABORATIVE LESSON INQUIRY CYCLES
KEY BENEFITS
Educators need to apply theory and research to practice in their own classrooms and schools. By engaging in collaborative lesson inquiry cycles, a team of 4–7 educators:
-
Engages alongside each other in classroom practice
-
Develops a shared repertoire of lesson and activity tools
-
Contribute to the joint enterprise of challenging and supporting English Learners
WHO WILL BENEFIT
A team of 4–7 teachers who share a subject area. The team could teach the same course or subject (e.g., Math 8 or early literacy) or could form a team across grade levels (e.g., K–1 or 6–8).
SERVICE DESIGN
Together a team will:
-
Plan and enact high-challenge, high-support lessons for English Learners.
-
Observe what works for whom, why, and under what conditions.
-
Refine the lesson iteratively through observation and discussion.
For teams to have a clear focus to observe for student talk, thinking, and learning, the team selects a focus from the following for each cycle:
-
Sustain academic rigor with English Learners by connecting ideas and practices.
-
Engage in quality interactions with English Learners through participation by design.
-
Sustain a purposeful language focus with English Learners that expand autonomy.
As shown below, a collaborative lesson inquiry cycle includes substantial preparation over videoconference to identify key goals and standards, as well as follow-up to offer individualized and collective implementation support. Two intense in-person days on campus and in classrooms ensure all lessons are grounded in practice.
