OVERVIEW

The QTEL Mathematics Institute is specifically designed to enable participants to develop a clear understanding of how college and career readiness standards for mathematics and language development standards impact English language learners by introducing mathematics educators to innovative processes and materials aligned with these standards. Participants can immediately implement these processes and materials, which are focused on the teaching of rigorous mathematical content paired with appropriate scaffolding, as they prepare their students for 21st century academic and workplace success.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • Understand how concepts from sociocultural theory, such as the notion of apprenticeship, guide instructional design and practice in the mathematics classroom

  • Develop expertise in engaging English Learners in deep, sustained learning of mathematical concepts and practices by designing lessons that encourage participation in authentic performance tasks, often using concrete objects to create hands-on experiences for students

  • Use the QTEL approach to design lessons in three moments with sequenced, scaffolded tasks which English Learners need to develop their knowledge of mathematical concepts while appropriating the language of mathematics
