QTEL SCIENCE INSTITUTE

SERVICES  |  EDUCATOR LEARNING  |  INSTITUTES  |  DISCIPLINARY INSTITUTES  |  SCIENCE INSTITUTE

OVERVIEW

The QTEL Science Institute is a direct response to how new science standards have re-conceptualized the teaching of science and the disciplinary practices associated with them. This institute addresses topics such as developing and using models in the science classroom, constructing scientific explanations, and engaging in argument from evidence, among others. In addition, the institute addresses the fact that secondary science teachers are held responsible for the disciplinary language development of students who are English language learners while providing students with 21st century skills.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Science teachers in grades K-12 that want to engage English Learners in rigorous science content while developing their academic language practices.

Participants will:

  • Understand how to enact the new Science standards and other state standards for literacy in science in powerful learning experiences for students in science classrooms

  • Develop their own expertise in engaging students in deep scientific learning by participating in authentic performance tasks

  • Understand how to support students in acquiring the scientific language, academic practices, and conceptual understandings they need to succeed in secondary science classrooms

  • Understand how to develop students’ capacity to read, discuss and write about science concepts in multiple scenarios

  • Use the QTEL approach to design lesson and/or unit plans that incorporate multiple scaffolding tasks to support students’ acquisition of standards-based science content and academic language

Teachers discussing science prompt
