How will Multilingual Learners get the most out of high quality instructional materials in mathematics?


  • Center the experiences, needs, and potential of Multilingual Learners in any adoption process.

  • Highlight and make public the role of implementation in any curriculum effort, and develop a vision of quality implementation with Multilingual Learners

  • Offer educators both foundational professional learning and ongoing, practice-oriented collaboration to expand collective capacity.

For example: To enhance their district’s adoption of Illustrative Mathematics, Philadelphia math teachers who were members of an apprenticeship created professional learning workshops based upon Illustrative Mathematics lessons. In the workshops, participants learned how they could systematically vary the intensity of scaffolding for Multilingual Learners through adjusting groupings, structure, and language, without reducing the complexity and rigor of the mathematical task (Chu, DePiper, & Hamburger, 2023).
