For many schools and districts, supporting Newcomer students in ways that offer them quality opportunities to learn is something new and difficult to accomplish. Oftentimes, teachers are left alone to try to figure out ways to support their recently arrived students with little support from outside the classroom.
In this session, participants will hear a story of a large urban district. They will learn what it looks like when, students, teachers, schools, a multi-lingual department, and a large district work together to ensure that Newcomers are supported to learn in a high-challenge environment while being offered high support to do so.
Participants in this session will hear first-hand from the curriculum designers how a vision to write a curriculum for Newcomers became a district-wide initiative to grow the expertise of teachers working with this quickly growing population while ensuring the academic success of students.
Any educator working to support Newcomers at any level of the educational system will benefit from hearing about these experiences. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how to support Newcomer students in your district!
