OVERVIEW
​

In the QTEL Spanish Academic Literacies Institute, participants will develop the tools and processes necessary for the teaching of academic Spanish to native Spanish-speaking students.  Using a wide range of pedagogical strategies in rich instructional sequences, participants learn key principles of promoting academic language development and developing expertise in applying those principles.

 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
​

Bilingual, dual language, and foreign language educators who wish to develop the tools and processes necessary for teaching academic Spanish to native Spanish-Speaking students.

​

Participants will:

​

  • Develop deep literacy knowledge that can serve as a base of support for ELA standards aligned instruction to accelerate students’ development of academic language skills in Spanish, English, and other languages

  • Design lessons with high expectations and high levels of support

  • Implement lessons that actively engage all students by inviting them to participate in sustained, high quality discourse

  • Design interconnected, coherent lessons that allow for the spiraling development of academic practices that support students

  • Work with diverse types of texts, including sophisticated picture books
