BUILDING THE BASE: SECONDARY MATHEMATICS

Audience:

Mathematics teachers in grades 6–12 who teach English Learners and want to expand their capacity to challenge and support their students in rigorous mathematical learning while developing academic language practices.

Goal:

To develop and deepen the capacity of secondary mathematics teachers to design and enact quality learning opportunities for English Learners.

 

You will learn to:

​

• Understand the demographic, disciplinary, and design imperatives that necessitate changing the learning conditions for English Learners in mathematics.

• Identify cross-cutting concepts that connect the algebra, geometry, and statistics.

• Grow student agency over time by offering clear choices of language tied to broader, overarching mathematical practices.

• Design lessons that foster growth in English Learners’ participation over time.
