BUILDING THE BASE ELEMENTARY: AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO LITERACY ACROSS THE CONTENT AREAS*

Audience:

Educators of English Learners in grades K–5* who wish to develop a firm foundation of theoretical understandings and corresponding strategies needed to apprentice young learners into disciplinary practices and academic uses of English.

Goal:

To develop the teacher expertise required to provide English Learners with equitable quality opportunities to learn.

 

You will learn to:

• Understand the ever-shifting context against which education takes place and what it means to provide English Learners with opportunities that develop their potential to become critical and productive citizens

• Engage in disciplinary exemplars that provide high expectations coupled with high support

• Design well-scaffolded lessons that address key standards

• Develop students’ academic uses of English in the disciplines
