BUILDING THE BASE, LITERACY: 

Supporting High Quality Education for Newcomers in Grades 6-12

Objective:

To develop educator expertise in the design and implementation of high-challenge and high-support instruction for Newcomer and beginning level English Learners.

 

Participants will:

• Experience and reflect on sound and enticing pedagogical exemplars designed for beginning ESL level students

• Explore how to support newly arrived English Learners through quality interactions and collaboration.

• Learn to apprentice students into generative academic practices with a focus on multiliteracies integrating the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing

• Learn how to amplify rather than simplify their invitations for students to engage in productive activity

• Design rigorous lessons in three moments which support students’ simultaneous development of conceptual, analytic and language practices.
