LEE HARTMAN
Senior Program Associate

Lee Hartman is dedicated to supporting educators in building their expertise to design and implement rich learning experiences for students designated as English Learners. He works to support teachers, classroom coaches, and district leaders all across the country to implement coherent, challenging, and deep ways of engaging English Learners in the development of both language and content knowledge. His particular areas of expertise include working with newcomer students, designing curriculum, and creating powerful learning experiences for educators.

Hartman was a classroom teacher for more than a decade, working with language minority students and with an emphasis on newcomers. He uses that experience to enhance the pedagogical knowledge and practice of educators to support student success. After leaving the classroom, he was an instructional coach designing and implementing new curriculum and professional development experiences that wove together language theory and practice.

Hartman also works as a researcher for the National Research and Development Center to Improve Education for Secondary English Learners, funded by the Institute of Education Sciences. His work includes developing an iterative curriculum in English Language Arts specifically designed for long-term English Learners to support their development of language, analytic practices, and content knowledge.

Hartman holds an MA from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, with studies at La Universidad de Alcalá de Henares in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, and holds a BA from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, with studies at La Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro in Querétaro, Mexico.
