QUALITY TEACHING AND LEARNING FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS WITH DISABILITIES

This institute develops participants' theoretical understanding and the pedagogical skills to provide students who are identified as English learners with disabilities with deep and accelerated learning opportunities. It builds on the notion of an amplified curriculum. Accordingly, some of the topics you will learn in this institute include:

 

• Shifts needed in the education of English learners with disabilities and how they impact everyday instruction, as well as professional collaboration and family engagement

• The design and enactment of lessons and tasks that engage students in quality interactions with the support of individualized accommodations and modifications

• High challenge, high support lessons that weave conceptual, analytical and language practices seamlessly

• How to amplify instruction for English learners with disabilities

• How to draw from students’ many assets to design inviting tasks that build speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills

• How to collaborate with professionals from different fields (e.g., general education, special education, and English language development) to maximize quality learning opportunities

• How to meaningfully engage families to communicate about students’ assets and learning needs
