KATHERINE CRICHTON
Senior Program Associate

As a Senior Program Associate at WestEd, Katherine Crichton designs educative curricular units that serve as models for teachers to enact high challenge and high support learning opportunities with secondary multilingual learners. In addition, Dr. Crichton develops and facilitates professional learning institutes, workshops, and collaborative coaching cycles that strengthen teachers’ pedagogical knowledge and practices for working effectively with students classified as English Learners.

Dr. Crichton’s areas of expertise include secondary English language arts curriculum and instruction with multilingual learners and the design of teacher professional learning. Dr. Crichton is a National Board Certified teacher who has taught secondary English language arts with refugee and immigrant newcomer students, coached teachers, and consulted with school districts on creating systems of support for multilingual students and their families. Dr. Crichton has also designed and taught graduate courses for pre-service and in-service K-12 teachers related to differentiated instruction, language and literacy assessment, ELL teaching methods, and linguistically responsive, culturally sustaining pedagogies.

Dr. Crichton holds a Doctor of Education in Language, Literacy, and Culture from University of Washington, a Master of Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Anthropology from Brown University.
