What can education systems do to ensure access for Multilingual Learners?
Critically examine pathways and patterns of Multilingual Learner access to courses and ambitious mathematics learning.
Ensure counseling and placement practices increase and optimize challenge and support for Multilingual Learners, rather than constrain them.
Develop ambitious pathways that accelerate Multilingual Learner progress toward desirable postsecondary outcomes and achievement.

For example: Students in mixed-ability groupings in accelerated algebra courses experienced greater long-term course access and outcomes (Dee & Huffaker, 2024). Indeed, pathways that begin in 4th and 5th grades and build toward postsecondary partnerships have resulted over time in 30% more Latino students taking Advanced Placement exams in a district with more than one-third English Learners. There are concrete actions that districts can take to review and elevate Multilingual Learner access to courses in math and beyond.
