BUILDING THE BASE, ELEMENTARY LITERACY

In this five-day professional learning, participants will learn how to design equitable and quality learning opportunities by implementing high-challenge and high-support instruction for K-5 English Learners to simultaneously develop disciplinary knowledge and related conceptual, analytic, and language practices.  Some of the topics to be discussed in this institute include:

  • The global and instructional shifts needed in the education of young English Learners to achieve equity and quality learning opportunities

  • The impact and power of

  • How to enact high-challenge, high-support lessons that weave conceptual, analytic, and language practices seamlessly

  • How to design lessons in three moments to actively engage K-5 students in high-quality learning experiences centered around quality interactions with peers and the teacher

  • How to support students’ development from oral to written language

  • How to weave lessons to design thematically-linked, spiraling units of instruction which revisit central practices and build student learning skills and stamina and that build their autonomy

  • How to work with a variety of texts presented in multiple modalities
