They're Ready—Are We?
The question isn't whether multilingual learners can handle rigorous content. It's whether we're providing equal access and scaffolded opportunities to engage with it.
This month, we're spotlighting two critical practices that transform belief into action for multilingual learners: intentionally inviting prior knowledge into the classroom and designing a master schedule that removes systemic barriers.

Surfacing Prior Knowledge Not Prerequisite Ideas
Scaffolding is not about simplifying—it’s about amplifying access to ideas and language. Instead of focusing on prerequisite ideas and waiting until students are “ready,” try surfacing students’ prior knowledge by inviting them to connect their lived experiences to new academic concepts.
This month, start a lesson with curiosity by inviting students to engage in a Notice, Wonder, and Connect task.

Elevating Course Access
Research consistently shows that the rigor of the courses students take has a greater impact on multilingual learner achievement than their level of English proficiency. Yet multilingual learners remain systematically underrepresented in core content and advanced coursework—not because they can't succeed, but because scheduling systems create barriers.
In our online course, “Elevating English Learner Access to Core and Advanced Courses.” you'll learn five evidence-informed practices to monitor course access, review master scheduling policies, and ensure English Learner services open doors rather than limit opportunities for rigorous learning.
